Brick Animals - How My Children Spent an Afternoon
Have Lego lovers at your house? I certainly do. My feet have been damaged by far more Lego bricks than I care to remember. I had a chance to preview Stef Layton's newest Brick book, Brick Animals and Hands On Tips, last week and, I kid you not, my two middle kids, ages 6 and 8, spent over two hours making some of the wonderful ideas in the book. After they finished doing that, they were so energized about their Lego they spent another hour helping me get our Lego collection a little more organized so they could make more! They have been creating ALL WEEKEND. That, my friends, is what I call success!!
You probably have noticed that Kendra and I don't do a ton of reviews on products or books. Those things that we do actually mention by name are things that we actually use and have really enjoyed. Brick Animals and Hands On Tips, by Stef Layton of Educating Laytons, is definitely one of those things!
Brick Animals and Hands-On Tips includes 24 animal creations, using both regular Lego bricks and Duplo size. Along with each creation is an animal classification sheet, so I just called it science for the day. Woot!
Another unexpected benefit was all the math they were doing in their heads. "Mom, I need one with six studs. Oh, but if you just have two with three studs that will work, too." This happened several times! And these are two children that just the week before were really fighting me on learning multiplication tables. I think we'll just use Lego from now on!
There are also great ideas for using Brick creations for other subjects, like History, Geography, and Reading, as well as ideas for practicing Fine Motor Skills.
To celebrate the release of her third Brick book, Stef is offering a $1 off discount code: BRICKREVIEW. Brick Animals and Hands-On Tips is regularly $4.99, but the discount code makes it only $3.99! Hurry, it expires March 10.
After you buy the book and your children have been creating, post some of your pictures up on the Preschoolers And Peace Facebook page. My kids would love to see them!
