Beautiful Picture Books About Summer

Do you check out stacks of books from the library and enjoy them with your kids? We tend to choose a topic and borrow everything we can on the subject, immersing ourselves in something good and coming up for air when all the books have been read to the last punctuation mark.

This week, we checked out a load from the library on the topic of summertime, and these emerged as our favorites:

Flotsam - A surprise treasure washes up on the shore for generations of beachcombers. The artwork by author and artist David Wiesner is stunning, and the draw of the book is in its wordless storytelling. We purchased Flotsam for our home library.

The Summer Visitors - A vacationing family isn't the only visitors to a lake house...

Hello Ocean - Well, yes! Hello ocean! And if you can't get your kiddos to a beach this summer, Hello Ocean will be a lovely book with which to dream of crashing waves and warm sand.

Mama, is it Summer Yet? - Waiting, waiting, waiting... this book illustrated pretty much how I feel through all of the other seasons. Illustrated beautifully, Mama, is it Summer Yet? takes a child on a journey through seasonal changes and celebrates the joys of summer.

The Relatives Came - And when they did, everyone enjoyed every last moment of lounging, dancing, singing, feasting, and celebrating.

Summer - Our favorite early reader celebrates the joy of all things summer!

At the Beach - Our Mighty Joe loves this one, and he's at about a 4-year-old level. The story is sweet and simple and definitely one to be read over and over again.

The Boy and the Ocean - God's love is just that vast. A beautiful addition to our collection from pastor and author Max Lucado.

The Night Before Summer Vacation - They're trying very hard to get out the door, but . . .
